How to instantly transform your IKEA shoe cabinet

I love IKEA. I mean I really really LOVE it. When I enter the store I get so excited about the possibilities of coming away with things to simplify and prettify my life, cheaply, in that Scandinavian style that I am so drawn to.

I remember getting the Hemnes shoe cabinet for my hallway. I couldn’t wait to build it and transform my entrance… and my life! And thus it was up in a jiffy (I’m rather expert at flat pack) and our shoes were all packed away in there neatly. The top drawer, perfect for putting stamps, keys, and other bits and bobs in, was a bonus which caused huge excitement. My dream is to have a stash of beautiful last minute gifts; small candles, balms, notebooks and jewellery for birthdays and celebrations or if I’m invited out to a friend’s for dinner. Alas! I am not that organised. Yet.

The gold really catches the light…

And so I lived with this shoe cabinet for two years, grateful for the space it saved me and the time saved on hunting down my son’s left shoe before school. I walked past this handy piece of furniture on the way out, and on the way back in, numerous times every day and always thought ‘shame the doorknobs are a bit ‘meh’’…

Until the day I window shopped online and saw these gorgeous drawer knobs from Ian Snow and had the idea to simply replace the mock iron ones provided.

It’s so simple to do. Just unscrew the IKEA supplied drawer knobs and replace with the new fancy pants ones.

Simply put the new drawer knob in the original hole.

And screw on the nut - Job done.

What a difference! The happiness I get just looking at my sexed-up shoe cabinet is well worth the £18 and those three minutes of my precious time.

TOP TIP! I think it looks great to position the new drawer knobs differently because this adds balance to the overall look. It also means that there’s always a bit of gold facing in the right direction to catch the changing light of the day.

Position them differently for added interest and balance and so there is always gold to catch the light during the day..

Whilst I am yet to buy the little last minute gifts to put in my top drawer, I do however have my Set of 8 Notecards (wink, wink!) in there for last minute thank you’s and thinking of you’s, that I can grab on my way out.
